Jacqueline Mead’s Two Princes and a Princess Visit Lapland
Just in time and ideal for the holiday season, Jacqueline Mead’s Two Princes and a Princess Visit Lapland is a lyrical, lovely children’s Christmas tale told in poetry, in the vein of classics like The Night Before Christmas. This storybook transports two brothers and their sister to Santa’s village in the North Pole through a magical wardrobe, and regales their adventures there.
Two Princes and a Princess Visit Lapland is a charming delight made with obvious care. It’s sweet as the crystals on a candy cane, but is neither too saccharine nor is it colourless. Lapland is simple enough for small children to read, alone or with a friend or parent, the prose clever and easily flowing, and the illustrations are adorable. Simon, Jason and Sophie create relatable, likeable protagonists with their love of dreaming and pretend.
Mead does a wondrous job of crafting and capturing the frosty magic and nostalgia of the Christmas season. Lapland evokes in the reader innocent wonder, the emotions of a child eagerly awaiting the precious chance to ask Santa for that year’s present. One can’t help but smile.
“Ask for toys or books or sweets, maybe socks for your feet but do not ask to solve world peace. Santa is always working on this, but it is very hard as you can imagine and takes more than one person.”
-From the elves’ rulebook
Two Princes and a Princess Visit Lapland is not without a lesson, and shows of course how good behavior can bring wonderful little fortunes along the way, but really are rewards in themselves as kindness, diligence and helpfulness are much appreciated by others.
If I had to seek any fault in the story, it feels a little brief - like their adventure is just launching as it ends, but I still recommend it with a full five stars for the imagination and genuine heart that Mead has put into it.
Lapland is perfect for children who love books, but their parents will also enjoy its entertaining prose and cute drawings.
