I'm a relatively new poet. I have my first book, "Everything is Smoke," published by Austin Macauley Publishers. Here's what I have found since becoming a poet. The part of the poetry world that gives prizes baffles me. The poetry they pick baffles me, and not only me, but everyone I read these prize winners to. I'm a working man in a working class industry, and when I read my colleagues the prize-winning poetry, they just say, "That was crap."
They, like me, think that poetry has to have structure, meter, rhyme, a beginning, a middle, and an end and over all be relatable. None of that seems to be apparent in the poetry that wins prizes.
