When the day is done
And all your friends are gone
You tend to wander and wonder
Why it feels like you are all alone
But you will always have someone
That is closer than a friend
He will keep you safe from now
Until the very end
We were slaves in bondage
Looking for a way out
Captivated by the thoughts of freedom
We chanted songs to let it out
We had to watch where we looked
And watch where we walked
We had to watch where we sat down
And we had to monitor our talk
We were so far from perfect
But we kept striving to do better
We would cry out late at night
While trying to learn to form a letter
We couldn’t write because
The education was not for a Negro
We couldn’t speak correctly
For if we did we got whipped just a little mo
We marched for our rights
Even when things looked so dim
We sat on the seats of righteous
Because of our tired and brittle limbs
You picked us up
And told us to stand
You said you are called righteous
Not for your but for my name
When we couldn’t get a good meal
You fed us with glory
When we cried out to you
You said my child I know your story
We asked you to protect us
Through all the hurt and the pain
You kept us from your covenant to our parents
And said we are protected as long as we came
Before you with humbled heats
And bowed down heads
You told us we are covered by your blood
Because this is what you have said
When our money ran out
And we felt like lower than low
You stood on your promises to us
And you told us to stop and go slow.
We walk the streets of justice
To only get water sprayed on us
We continued to march on for justice
Even when we were spat at and cussed
We marched on to the beat of the drum
The one you have playing in your ear
You told us to stand for my namesake
And for that, you shall have no fear
When all our friends started to die
And all around us, we began to lose hope
We started to get sick in our bodies
We tried our best to not just sit and mope
When the doctors said we had no more chance
You said I have the final say
When the lawyers tried to take all they could
You said to them not today
When nurses said there is nothing else we could do
You said I am their hope
When we wanted to just give up and go home
You said I will help you cope
When we lost started to lose our leaders
And it seemed like we had choices left
And even when we lost our jobs
And then we were plagued with stress
You told us to stand on your promises
For you have the world in your hand
You said my child hide my words in your heart
So when the time comes you can stand
When our finances were tested
And we wanted to not tithe but a tip
You told us to give you the 10%
Because you knew what to do with it.
You said you had my back even when I couldn’t tell
I know you are the one who took us thru it all
The hurt the hard ached and all the hell
You said to us my child I am here for you
As I have always been
I am here for you to lean on
Because you are a child of the most high one
You said I am the same today and yesterday
And that when we are feeling pressure and want to buckle
You said my child I have always been here for you
And have shown you how to survive during the struggle.
