February 1, 1960 Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworths lunch counter 4 college students
The Greensboro 4
4 black young men Determined to end segregation Sat at a counter They would not leave until they were served
They would not leave
They returned the next day The same request May we have a cup of coffee Again they were refused
But they were not alone
By the 4th day 300 people showed up at the Woolworth store Determined to end segregation All they wanted was to be treated as an equal
At the end of a week the protest has spread Winston Salem, Durham, Charlotte Even as far as Lexington, Kentucky They would not be denied
Segregation would end
Violence would be shown against them But they would continue Every day they would continue The strength of determination
And the faith in what they were doing
Finally the manager of Woolworths Had 3 employees change clothing Sit at the counter And quietly they were served
Segregation was no more
70,000 would take part From Ohio to Nevada Pools, beaches, and parks Galleries, libraries, and museums
All would fall from the stench of segregation
Today a statue of 4 young men Graces the campus of NC AT&T Their 4 seats sit in the Smithsonian The Woolworths is now a museum
No longer a home of segregation.
