J Lake teaches high school students to appreciate poetry for its nuances. She shows them the subtle ways poets use language and put words together in fresh and interesting combinations. Lake inspires teens to write poetry, but most of all to enjoy it. The national PoetryOutLoud competition is just one way Lake gets kids from southeast San Diego to bring poetry meaningfully into their lives.
