On World Poetry Day Poetry is my refuge on cold wintry nights The first light of dawn The evening twilight that paints the sky In hues of fiery coral. As the glorious orb dips below the horizon Poetry whispers in my ears. In spring, the season of joy and abundance When vibrant flowers bloom Leaves flutter in the zephyr Birds sing in the trees Gentle showers soak the earth Refreshing Mother Nature Poetry hums a song of revival. When storms rage in my life And devastation and havoc follows Poetry is the rainbow after the rains Bringing in hope and solace Like the warm comforting embrace of my mother In whose arms I find peace and feel safe. Poetry is my muse That fuels my creative juice It is my emotion That sparks imagination The friend in times of sorrow and joy A ever constant companion The music and rhythm And my connection with the world. ©® Susmita Mukherjee

A weir holds back the river against the flow of the morning tide I wonder how many thoughts, unspoken, lie behind its barrier- ponderings of love, turmoil, betrayal obstructed by the dam of emotional blocks struggling to break free from their confines. Like silent storms beneath the surface, they swirl in the depths of the mind, the dam of fear, of shame, keeps them hidden from the light. moment a potential release, each breath a reminder of restraint. The heart, a vessel so full of longing, yet bound by invisible chains, craves the freedom to flow unbound, to speak the words that have waited too long. But the weir stands firm, its stones like the weight of doubt, the water rising higher, pressing against its edges, until one day— will it break, or will the river flow in silence forever? ©®Susmita Mukherjee

In a world of giants The pomerenian is a flicker - A spark against the horizon Small but fierce Its eyes catch the stars Twinkle with mischief Near but distant A lively bundle of joy, A fluffy ball of fur Its love, a devotion Unmatched, unparalleled. ©® Susmita Mukherjee

She bears the weight of life in her womb In quiet fortitude and strength in silence Love flows from her hands, boundless, true With every breath, she nurtures, she creates A force of nature, shaping destinies and fates In her heart, the universe is spun, A mother, a warrior, whose battles are never undone Through life's storms, through trials She stands tall with a smile. The beacon of resilience and of light She gives, she grows with hands that heal A love so deep blooms, it makes the world a home. ©®Susmita Mukherjee #internationalwomensday

The petulant midday sun Raging, blazing, vindictive orbit at its zenith It's blinding glare, a white hot disc Scorching and oppressive Over the earth and living ones A merciless sentinel in the cerulean sky Wrapping us in its stifling embrace A shimmering mirage dancing in the air. ©® Susmita Mukherjee

The lights are diming My reservoir of hope is fading  away As I struggle to find my feet Amidst the failures and disappointments Burying me alive Sinking me in despair I grab on to the last straw of hope To catapult me to brighter days. ©® Susmita Mukherjee

She hated herself there’s no denying that As God’s favourite chastened child Bearing the burden of betrayal And a heavy heart filled with sorrow In her sombre world Where light doesn’t penetrate the walls Penalized for her sins Waiting for the gallows to pull in And bring her dim life story to the end A tortured soul never touched with genuine love Appreciated or treasured The curtains will fall On the lie, she has been living for so long Then may her soul rest in peace. by Susmita Mukherjee

Love is the splendour that mystifies me A rainbow in the sky colours my mind Rapture bosom in high-spirited glee Blind by passion, beloved we enshrined   Romance, Zephyr on a hot humid day Dawn of spring after each winter season As butterflies draw toward flowers way Lovers seek closeness for any reason   Amor, a warm bright light within our heart Set ablaze or calmed at our partner’s touch Twin flames share deeper connections by heart True love grows yet stronger with time as such   Two souls entwine kin to fine tapestry Soul mates share a bond of love happily      Copyright (c) by Susmita Mukherjee

I took up the call The command was made Placed the receiver down Hardened my resolve Steadying my shivering nerves I picked up the gun Shot at the innocent man He fell with a thud Blood spurted from his chest And ran down the floor With my descent into Hell I fell from Grace My gut swiftly swirled Downwards the twilight zone A throne of skin and bone spoke "Thine sin you must atone." ©®Susmita Mukherjee

Bury me in the warmth of your embrace Drown me in the scent of your skin Let your lingering kisses feel like Heaven Your beating heart is my home and haven Making my fears disappear in the whispers of forever Let our passions ignite our souls Where two souls beyond bodies are lost In everlasting love surpassing fantasy. by Susmita Mukherjee

His life came to a ruinous end Plummeted into insanity The red-bearded painter With his self-hatred, despair and desperation for understanding He drank yellow paint thinking it would make him happy Locked up in a mental asylum that would shatter any person’s self-belief Deceived Vincent cut his earlobe in an unforeseen calamity But he channelled the awful torment into beauty Immaculate and sublime to find ecstasy in the ordinary And in transforming the banal into a magical masterpiece The Starry Night, Sunflowers, Self-Portrait, The Potato Eaters, Wheatfield with Crows, Irises, The Bedroom in Arles Each a genius’s masterstroke into Eternity A jumble of love, sorrow and rage Painting the canvas in bold strokes as his heart and mind burst into flames The King of colour, a whisper into the future unheard in his times He died in a rut with voices all over his mind. So, he picked up the gun And the bullet went straight into his golden heart Wonder how many colours lost their lives on that day? ©®Susmita Mukherjee

Sifting through the sands of time Ephemeral it fades away As water flows down the river It's constantly on the move Time and tide waits for no one Instead of lamenting the past We should seize every moment Fulfil our dreams and wishes Till our time on this earth is over And death knocks at our door. ©®Susmita Mukherjee

Love came to me like a warm fire Hugging me in a cold wintry night As a burning bush you engulfed me In your flames of desire A little delay till our souls met Never caused any harm It was God's miracle That brought us together in this cosmic bond But it takes time to embrace the pain Of not having you near And loving you wholeheartedly strong. ©®Susmita Mukherjee

I miss you like the parched earth thirsts for the rain I miss you like the nightingale's song heralds the coming of spring I miss you like the night birds wait for the darkness to fall I miss you like a warm campfire in a chilly wintry night I miss you like the sunshine in a damp cloudy day I miss you infinitely in every possible way Do you miss me like I do? ©®Susmita Mukherjee
